Coronavirus cases, deaths stay high in Romania

The current coronavirus spike showed no signs of easing off on Thursday, with new cases rising to 1,345 and 45 deaths reported in the last day.

The Strategic Communication Group said 458 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units, a rise from previous days.

Authorities tested 24,447 people in the past day, of which 5.57% were positive, in line with ratios during the past week.

About 8,000 patients with the virus are hospitalized, including patients in ICU.

Most of Thursday’s new cases were in the capital, which saw 192 new infections, the highest figure ever. The county of Prahova, an area north of Bucharest which includes hills and mountain resorts which are popular with tourists, reported 102 cases. Arges county, a stricken area in southern Romania which has been hit by outbreaks of Covid-19 had 99 new cases.

Romania has now reported almost 58,000 cases of coronavirus. Cases have surged in recent weeks after some lockdown restrictions were lifted.

In response, local authorities are making masks mandatory in outdoor public places and there is a curfew on restaurant and bars which have to close by 11 pm.

Nearly 29,000 patients have recovered from the virus and 5,600 patients with no symptoms have been discharged from hospital.

Some 1.32 million tests have been carried out so far.
