Coronavirus cases fall in Romania as fewer tests carried out, but infection rate remains high

The number of new confirmed coronavirus cases in Romania dropped to 166 on Monday, but the rate of infection remained high.

Even though Monday’s cases were about half the level on Sunday, when 320 cases were reported, the rate of infection was higher on Monday.

Some 3,682 were conducted in the last 24 hours, and 4.5% of those confirmed positive. On Sunday, when more than 7,000 tests were conducted, 4.04% of those tested positive.

So far, 564, 300 tests have been carried out in Romania.

The Strategic Communication Group said the total number of cases rose to 22,165 on Monday.

The death count  stood at 1,427 on Monday, after 17 people succumbed to the virus on Sunday.

The latest figures come as Parliament prepares to vote on whether to extend the state of alert. President Klaus Iohannis has appealed to lawmakers to extend restrictions but opposition parties claim there is no justification.

Amid a disagreement on whether to extend  the state of alert for another month, Romania relaxed more measures on Monday, allowing private schools and malls to reopen for the first time in three months.

There are 175 people being treated in intensive care, more than in recent days.

Meanwhile, more than 15,800 people have recovered from the illness.

There are 1,331 people in institutionalized quarantine and  92,700 in self-isolation at home.
