New Covid-19 cases continued to rise in Romania, with 953 infections reported on Thursday, almost 100 more than the previous day.

The Strategic Communication Group said 18 people with the virus died in the past 24 hours, including one person in their 30s.

Authorities said it was the highest daily tally since May 11, when there were 1,156 cases.

More than 35,000 people were tested for the virus in the past 24 hours. Some  2.68% of the tests came up positive.

Bucharest reported 169 cases, more than anywhere else. Cluj and Timis in western Romania each reported more than 40 cases. Seven counties had between 20 and 30 new infections.

Cases have been rising steadily in recent weeks and authorities expect a peak at the end of September. The new delta variant which is more contagious is contributing to the recent spike.

There are currently about 1,650 Covid patients being treated in hospital, of which 228 patients are in intensive care.

The national infection rate is 0.32 per 1,000 inhabitants.
