Fire breaks out on passenger train in southern Romania; 250 evacuated the train

Some 250 passengers fled a train after it caught fire on Wednesday afternoon in southern Romania. There were no reports of casualties.

The blaze happened near the Videle railway station in Teleorman, west of Bucharest.

The fire erupted in the train driver’s compartment and spread to the first carriage, authorities said.

The InterRegio train had left Bucharest at 13.45 and was headed to Arad in western Romania, an 11-hour journey.

The Teleorman Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said about 250 passengers left the train.

„The fire is contained and firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze” a statement said.

Passengers waited in a field for about an hour, before being transported to VIdele to continue their journey.

„Today… there was a fire in the driver’s cabin on the IR 349 train from Bucharest North to Arad near Videle station. Railway staff .. alerted the emrergency services … All measures were taken to limit the effects of the fire,” a statement from the Romanian Railways said.

„The safety of the 250 passengers and staff was not in danger,” it added.

Passengers who had nearby destinations got another train and those headed to Timisoara and Arad will catch another train which will have extra coaches.

Investigators are working to establish the cause of the fire.
