We can be certain of one thing: Romanian nationalist leader George Simion sweats like a horse and toils like a dog to get a place at the top table.
He has multiple responsibilities on his shoulders: he’s a waiter at Putin’s table, a waiter at Trump’s table, and a waiter at the tables of those who would sabotage the rules-based world order. It’s tough work and long shifts because the diners are always hungry.
He’s called a “sovereignist” at home, but the AUR leader is actually a servant to two foreign masters and probably something of a revelation for both Moscow and Washington, with his shameless zeal, near flawless hypocrisy and total contempt for the interests of this own country.
He has been diligent in dishing up Putinist and Trumpist propaganda on Ukraine and the EU.
In the world of European right-wing extremism, he is peerless. George Simion is cheap labor, ready to shoot at any time, even when his populist brothers would hesitate, back off and give themselves up.
The case of Greenland was exemplary: when the most eccentric comrades of European extremism – Putinists and Trumpists – but still with limits and red lines they won’t cross, hid in the bushes from the shadow of the boss in the White House, the tireless George Simion posed cheerfully, happy to slice a cake in the shape of the famous Arctic island, decorated with the American flag.
Although he brought shame on his country through this irresponsible gesture (as a parliamentarian and party leader), George Simion did not settle down, but, on the contrary, increased the stakes.
This is how he came to contribute (even publicly boasting about it) to the (still unfinished) report of the Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives. That’s how he then came to promote it at home, as if it were the Ten Commandments.
In reality, the document in question is the work of some allies of the American president, a purely political work and operation, and a awork and an operation in which Romania plays a role but the big stake is kind of hybrid attack on the European Union.
For the story of this Trumpist report, presented to the Romanian people by Simion with the same “honesty” with which the pious football hooligan crosses himself, appears to be an object of international influence peddling, made by techno-billionaires around Trump, and the hard core of MAGA ideologists around the current tenant in the White House.
The report of that Committee on Legal Affairs serves enormous financial interests and ominous imperialist political interests. And this is what our George Simion has harnessed himself to, with his anti-lobby related to Romania, and the zealousness with which he advertises it for the benefit of others, but not Romania.
The report is subversive (as seen by the headline); it is focused on Europe, not on Romania and it has the air of being part of the broader offensive of American tech moguls against the regulatory policy and penalty measures of the European Commission. All this, in a context in which Trump is blackmailing and hitting European trade with tariffs, and social media has become on the one hand social gangrene and a threat to democracy, as well as a political weapon used by MAGA and the White House against European states.
U.S. tech oligarchs fear the European Commission’s measures will cut profit margins and bring potential fines. The MAGA-Trump circle fears the European Commission’s measures will weaken its ability to undermine European governments and its ability to pump up extremist parties, including AUR, which are valuable to the White House in terms of their Euroscepticism and outrageous loyalty to MAGA and Trump.
The pretext in the report, about the U.S. struggle with censorship and its concern for free speech in Europe, is junk food for minds already overwhelmed by the intellectual and moral garbage abundant on social media of Musk and Zuckerberg. Garbage injected non-stop by non-transparent algorithms whose sole objective lies in the emotional manipulation of users, because this is how they can obtain more profit.
A interesting detail, to which a Putinist-Trumpist tool such as George Simion should pay attention, is that in recent weeks Europe has begun to speak “Trumpish”.
The old continent has begun to dialogue with Trump in the only language that the US leader understands: force. It was seen in the case of Greenland, and is also becoming evident in the case of the American tech oligarchy.
It is probably no accident that laws limiting minors’ access to social media – from Australia to Europe is no coincidence. It is also probably no coincidence that Elon Musk was summoned by French prosecutors, and the X headquarters in Paris was searched. These are probably just some elements that are in plain sight, and represent a door slammed sharply in someone’s face but also a window left slightly ajar for mature negotiations.
With the lack of wisdom that he is known for, George Simion has fully assumed the status of a 24/24 vacuum cleaner for Putinism and Trumpism. He did so because this s the only thing he understands from what is happening today and because there are large gaps in his relationship to history.
George Simion is playing a profoundly anti-European game, but is not profoundly pro-American either. Just as Mr. Trump is playing a profoundly anti-European game, without playing a profoundly pro-American game.
The AUR leader is just an old Putinist who has changed his clothers just like the US president himself.
