MEP Siegfried Mureşan on Sunday said that, if Calin Georgescu is elected president of Romania, it would lead to }the immediate blocking of European funds” for the country, News.ro.
He cited the case of neighboring Hungary where another hard-right leader Viktor Orban has been in power since 2010.
“Hungary has blocked over 20 billion euros of European funds, because Viktor Orban attacks judges, independent institutions, abolish the media and attacks independent journalists. The same thing would happen” in Romania if we had a president who breaks laws and rules,” he added.
“So that no one will be surprised later: with Calin Georgescu the president of Romania European funds would immediately be blocked for Romania,” Siegfried Muresan said in a Facebook post on Sunday.
The Liberal MEP stressed that the European Union has clear rules: whoever wants European funds must respect European values.
