NATO’s Mark Rutte visits Romania on Wednesday for talks with the key Ally which shares the longest border with Ukraine.
Mr. Rutte will meet President Nicușor Dan during his one-day visit, his first to Romania since he became Secretary-General in October 2024.
The meeting comes a week after Washington announced it would reduce its troop presence in Romania by about 800, leaving about 1,000 at three NATO bases.
Rutte’s talks with Dan and other key officials will focus on security challenges the Alliance, particularly on NATO’s eastern flank, and strengthening Romania’s national security and collective defense and deterrence capabilities. Romania shares a 640-kilometer border with Ukraine.
The Secretary-General is attending the NATO-Industry Forum held in the Romanian capital on November 5-6. It’s a key platform for strategic dialogue between the Alliance and member states’ defense industries.
President Dan and the NATO Secretary General Rutte are scheduled to join the forum on Thursday.
Rutte will meet other key Romanian officials during his visit.
