In what appears to be a episode of the Twilight Zone, a shiny metal monolith has vanished as mysteriously as it appeared in a mountainous region in northeastern Romania.

The metal structure made a sudden appearance four days ago close to an ancient Dacian fortress.

It would have been simply a bizarre occurrence had it not been for a similar event more than 6,000 miles away in a U.S desert.

The disappearance in Romania immediately sparked speculation it may be related to a mystery structure in the United States.

A similar pillar was spotted in a Utah desert about two weeks ago. However, it also vanished after generating excitement internationally among science-fiction fans who compared it to Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

In the movie, an alien monolith is a recurring symbol that appears to play a role in the development of human evolution.

Piatra Neamt mayor, Andrei Carabelea, said he believed the structure had been created by „bold, extraterrestrial and rebellious teenagers who left home with their parents’ UFOs and began to plant metallic monoliths around the world.”

„They started in Utah and then in Piatra Neamt. I am honored they chose our town.” he said in a post on Facebook.

However, local media reported the origin of the Romanian monolith may be more down-to-earth.

According to news reports said it was erected by a local welder, and subsequently removed.

A spokeswoman for Piatra Neamt police, Georgiana Mosu, said officers were conducting an inquiry into the illegally-installed structure, which was positioned in a protected archaeological area from Nov. 27, Aleph news reported.
