Number of new coronavirus cases in Romania drop to 125, lowest for six days

Romanian authorities reported 125 new cases of coronavirus, a sharp drop from previous days.

The Strategic Communication Group said Monday that the total number of cases rose to 20,604 with the latest figures. Monday’s figure was the lowest number of cases since June 2.

Some 1,334 people have succumbed to the virus, including eight in the last day.

The latest figures came after Health Minister Nelu Tataru said the government may not immediately ease restrictions that were put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus after a slight spike in new cases.

The government will review the situation and make an announcement on Thursday.

Romania recorded far fewer than 200 cases for almost three weeks until four days ago, when the number of new infections began to creep up.

On Monday, 146 patients were being treated for the illness in intensive care.

Meanwhile, almost 15,000 patients have recovered from the disease.

Some 2,113 are in institutionalized quarantine and more than 94,000 are in self-isolation at home under medical supervision.

Some 506,000 tests to detect the virus have been conducted so far.
