Record number of Covid-19 tests confirms more than 600 new cases for second day in a row in Romania

Romanian authorities confirmed 641 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday after a record number of tests were carried out.

The Strategic Communication Group said that 18,440 tests were conducted nationwide in the past 24 hours.

Although the new infections were the second highest figure for a single day,some 3.48% of people tested were confirmed to have the diseases. That’s the lowest percentage since July 7.

There were 21 deaths in the past day raising the death count to 1,952.

The youngest patient was in their 20s, while 11 patients who succumbed to the virus were in their 60s. Authorities said all the fatalities were people with underlying health conditions.

Romania has reported 34,226 cases since the pandemic began.

Some 24,155 people have recovered from the virus in Romania.

Most of the latest cases were in the southern county of Arges, a favorite tourist spot which has seen a spike in recent weeks. Eighty-seven new infections were confirmed in Arges in the past day, while Brasov county, another tourist destination saw 54 cases. Bucharest had 67.

There are 248 patients being treated in intensive-care units, more than previous days.

The number of coronavirus cases have soared after lockdown restrictions were eased and people began to return to normal life.

Face masks are mandatory in indoor public places, but the rules aren’t always respected. Some people say they are tired of the restrictions, while others don’t believe the virus exists.

Social distancing rules are often not respected.
