Romania again reports more than 1,000 new Covid-19 cases. Almost 15% of tests came out positive

Romania registered more than 1,000 cases of coronavirus for the sixth day running, authorities said Monday.

The high number of cases_ 1,104_ was more alarming as fewer tests were carried out as is customary during the weekend.

Some 14.46% of people tested were confirmed to have the virus, which is the highest percentage of positive tests since April 2.

It was not immediately clear what the reason for the surge was. In the past week about between about 4% and under 8% of tests have come out positive.

Nineteen people died in the past 24 hours taking the total of fatalities to 2,206. One person in their 30s died, and another was in their 40s. Most deaths were people in their 70s and all but two of the people who had died had underlying health conditions.

There are 353 patients being treated in intensive care, the highest-ever figure.

Romania has now reported a total of 45,902 cases since the outbreak began in February.

There were 129 cases in the southern county of Arges which has seen a number of outbreaks in recent weeks.  Brasov county, a tourist destination with mountains and Saxon churches and villages, had 108 new infections.

After a drop in cases on Sunday, the Romanian capital reported 167 new cases. Five counties didn’t report a single new case.

There are about 6,900 hospitalized with the virus in Romania.
