Romania has finished fifth in the International Maths Olympics, scoring better than any other country in Europe in its best performance in more than two decades.
Gold medals
Two Romanian high-school students bagged gold medals and three took silver.
“Proud of our young people who had the best performance in 25 years (sic) thanks to hard work, discipine and perseverance! They have put Romanian schools back on the international map,” Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca wrote on Friday on social media.
hina came first, followed by South Korea, the U.S., Vietman and then Romania which had its best result since 1999 when it came fourth,
Romania took first place in at the prestigious competition in 1996.
The IMO is an annual worldwide competition for exceptionally talented high school students. A total of 104 countries and regions sent teams with 589 students to participate in this year’s competition which took place in Oslo, Norway from July 6-15.
The Romanian students who won gold medals at the 2022 International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO 2022) were:
Robert Dragomirescu – gold medal at IMO 2022, Honorable mention at last year’s International Mathematics Olympiad. He is a student at the International High School of Informatics in Bucharest
David-Andrei Anghel – gold medal at IMO 2022, silver medal at last year’s International Mathematics Olympiad, also a student at the International High School of Informatics.
Students who won silver medals at the International Mathematics Olympiad 2022 (IMO 2022):
Andrei Moldovan – silver medal at IMO 2022, silver medal at last year’s Olympics, also a student at the International High School of Informatics.
Vlad – Titus Spătaru – silver medal at IMO 2022, which is also his first participation in the International Mathematics Olympiad, who also studies at the International High School of Informatics in Bucharest
Andrei-Giovani Chiriță – silver medal at IMO 2022, bronze medal at last year’s Olympics. He is a student at the Tudor Vianu National College of Computer Science in Bucharest
Radu-Andrei Lecoiu – silver medal at IMO 2022, bronze medal at last year’s Olympics, a student at the International High School of Informatics.
Team
The team was coordinated by professors Cătălin-Liviu Gherghe and Marius Perianu. Last year, Romania ranked 27th in the International Mathematics Olympiad, with three silver medals and two bronze medals. In 2020, the national team in mathematics was ranked 15th, and in 2019 it was 17th position.
