Romania moves closer to joining the OECD

Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca on Friday said that  Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development had approved a roadmap for Romania becoming a member of the group.

“We  thank the OECDS members for the approval of the Roadmap for Romania’s accession to  the OECD. We commend the Secretary General Mathias Cormann’s leadership and the efforts of his team. Romania looks forward to engaging with Members in the accession process,” the prime minister said in a Tweet.

The roadmap is contingent on Romania confirming the adherence to the values, vision and priorities of the international organization.

Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu on Thursday said he welcomed the accession roadmap . “It will help authorities deliver forward-looking reforms,” he said in a tweet.

The OECD Council opened accession discussions with Romania in January, 18 years after the country presented its candidacy. At the same time, it began discussions with Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia and Peru.

“OECD membership will consolidate Romania’s international profile and ensure access to the expertise of an international organisation valued for the quality of its economic studies and its public policies’ assessments,” the government said at the time.

The OECD is an intergovernmental organization with 38 member countries, founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade.
