Romania nears 4,000 cases of coronavirus, as local authorities make it compulsory to wear face covering in public

The number of coronavirus cases in Romania climbed toward 4,000 on Sunday, with authorities in two counties making it compulsory to wear some form of face covering in public in a bid to halt the spread of the disease.

There were 251 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 3,864, the Strategic Communication Group said.

There have been 148 deaths from COVID-19, since the outbreak began.

Some 374 patients have recovered since the outbreak, authorities said.

There are currently 141 people in intensive care in Romanian hospitals.

Two Romanians counties will make it compulsory starting Monday to wear a mask or a scarf covering their mouths and noses in public places, or risk a fine.

Vasului, in northeast Romania,and Maramures in the northwest, follow Galati county in eastern Romania which was the first region to introduce the rule.



Some countries in the region including Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have recently made it compulsory to wear some form of covering over their mouths and noses when entering certain public space.
