Romania posts 2,500 new Covid-19 cases, another high as fourth wave spreads

Romania has recorded 2,520 new coronavirus cases in the past day, and 41 virus-related deaths, authorities said Friday.

It was a another new high for the East European country as the more contagious delta variant has fueled a fourth wave.

It was the first time there has been in excess of 2,500 cases since April 23.

Cases have steadily risen in the past few weeks and Friday’s figure was 13.2% more than the previous day.

The increased cases have come as kindergartens and schools return for the new school year on Monday. Most pupils will physically return to school, with remote learning only in places where there are more than six cases per 1,000 inhabitants.

There are are about 4,300 Covid inpatients including 107 minors. Five children and 538 adults are being treated intensive care units.

Bucharest again had the most new infections, posting 345 new positive cases. After that, most cases were recorded in Timis southwest Romania and Cluj county in the northwest.
