Romania posts more than 5,000 new Covid-19 cases, highest rate in over two months

Romania has reported more than 5,000 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, the highest rate in more than two months. One-fifth of the new cases posted in the capital Bucharest,

There were 96 Covid-19 linked deaths in the past day and 1,171 patients in intensive care treatment, a slight rise from the previous day.

The Strategic Communication Group reported 5,236 cases following bout 38,000 tests, giving a positivity rate of  13.69%.

It was the highest single-day figure since  January 6 and a 15% rise on Wednesday. Bucharest added an alarming 1,102 cases, the highest daily rate since January 17.

Cases have shot up in the past week with some  medics saying Romania is now experiencing  a third wave.

Romanian authorities have poised to impose a 10 pm curfew to try and slow the spread of the virus.

The accumulated  number of cases reached is 845,000 of which the vast majority have recovered.

Five counties or areas are currently in the ‘red scenario’ with more than 3 cases per 1,000.

The virus hotspot is currently Timis, in western Romania which has 5.18 cases per 1,000 and even higher in Timisoara.

Bucharest entered the ‘red scenario’ bracket late last week and now has 3.16 cases per 1,000. The spike in cases has led to new restrictions, including restaurant and theater closures.

Some 96 patients succumbed to the virus in the past 24 hours, of which only one didn’t have an underlying health condition.
