Romania posts more than 6,000 new Covid-19 cases for 2nd day

Romania reported 6,186 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, the highest number of cases in a single day this year.

Cases have soared in the past week across Romania and the latest toll was 35% higher than a week ago.

Eight-nine patients with the virus_ 45 men and 44 women_ died in the past 24 hours. Apart from four cases, all the deaths were patients with underlying health conditions, the Strategic Communication Group said

.It was the highest daily figure since December 12. The latest spike has led to concerns about added pressure on the creaky health care system. There are 1,266 SARS-CoV-2 patients in intensive care units.

Cases have soared in the capital where restaurants with indoor seating and theaters have closed after it entered the ‘red scenario’ after the infection rate rose above 1,000 over a 14-day rolling period.

Authorities imposed fresh restrictions in Bucharest this week, including an earlier curfew and mandatory forms for anyone out during curfew hours, to slow the spread of the virus.

Numbers remained high, with 1,245 new cases posted in the capital, the most since Dec. 29. Timis, a county in western Romania which went into a partial lockdown and is currently which has the highest concentration of cases anywhere in Romania posted 273 new cases.

Ilfov, a county next to Bucharest reported 433 new cases and it now has an infection rate of more than 5 cases per 1,000 residents.
