President Nicușor Dan said on Monday that NATO, the EU and the United Kingdom have recently publicly confirmed that Russia is carrying out cyberattacks, digital manipulation and disinformation campaigns in Europe.
Presenting statements from Romania’s partners, the Romanian president said that Bucharest has been asked to present new evidence on Russian meddling in last year’s presidential elections which led to the ballot being cancelled and a rerun being organized in May. Russia has denied interfering in the ballot.
“I urge those who still doubt Russia’s interference in the November 2024 elections in Romania to read the press releases below,” the president said in a statement.
“Attempts by foreign state forces to interfere in our elections… have been condemned for the first time in official statements from NATO and the European Union”
“ NATO, the EU and the UK confirm that Russia is carrying out cyberattacks, online manipulation and disinformation in European states, including Romania, and in electoral campaigns,” he said.
“Obviously, the Romanian state must come up with new evidence, as it discovers it, and it should have prevented what happened in November 2024,” Nicușor Dan wrote on his Facebook page.
He cited a document released by the UK Government on the actions of the GRU, reputedly Russia’s main foreign intelligence agency.
If you look at the technical document published by the UK Government revealing the actions of the GRU…. you will notice that, even for states who are recognized for their intelligence gathering, that proving such interference is a long process,” he said.
