Romania reports 808 new Covid-19 cases as testing drops over weekend

Romania registered 808 new cases of coronavirus cases on Monday as testing fell over the weekend.

The Strategic Communication Group said 6,348 tests were carried out, less than a third of normal levels,

Some 12% tested positive, about double the normal rate of positive tests.

Even with the drop in testing, Bucharest recorded 228 new cases, more than a fourth of all new infections.

The counties of Cluj and Iasi in northwest and northeast Romania had 38 and 37 new cases respectively, fewer than previous days, but higher than other places, following recent trends in those areas.

Three counties didn’t record a single new case in the past 24 hours, likely as a result of reduced testing.

The cumulative total of cases climbed to 113,589, while almost 90,700 patients with Covid-19 have recovered.

There are currently 464 patients in intensive care units out of 7,200 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalized.

Some 23 patients with SARS-CoV-2 succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, the lowest death rate since September 14.


One person in their 30s died, three in their 40s and and three in their 50s, and all but one had an underlying health condition such as diabetes, cancer of heart disease.

There are currently 11.228 people in self-isolation at home and 6,800 in institutionalized isolation.
