Romania reports almost 10,000 new Covid cases as infections rise

New Covid-19 cases in Romania remained high on Wednesday, with 9,802 infections reported in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said. There were 29  Covid-19 related deaths in the same period.

Cases have soared in the past two weeks, with 12,353 cases reported Tuesday, the highest daily tally since Feb. 22.

Bucharest had 2,197 new infections on Wednesday which was more than anywhere else, while Cluj county, home to Romania’s second biggest city, reported 612 and the Black Sea Constanta region posted 500. Sixteen counties had more than 200 new cases.

Some 279 of the new positive testings were people who had already had the virus.

Romanian hospitals were treating about 3,600 patients, including 600 children. Some 233  patients are in intensive care units, most of them unvaccinated.

Romania has seen almost 66,000 deaths since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Cases fell in May and June and the country switched to weekly reports in June.

But authorities resumed daily reports on July 12 after infections began to rise sharply.
