The number of new coronavirus infections remained high on Friday, with authorities reporting 411 new cases in the past 24 hours, the second consecutive day when new cases have gone beyond 400.

The Strategic Communication Group said medical authorities had conducted 11,800 tests in the past day, meaning that 3.84% of tests came out positive.

Friday’s figure was a drop from Thursday when 460 news cases were reported, the highest in more than two months.

Romania has reported a total of 25, 697 cases since the pandemic began. Of those, 18,181 patients have recovered.

Twelve patients succumbed to the virus in the past day, taking the death count to 1,579.

Romania currently has 181 patients being treated in intensive care, a slight drop since Thursday.

Compared to its neighbors, Romania has registered more cases than in Hungary where 4,127 cases have been reported, and in Bulgaria where almost 2,500 cases have been reported.

Moldova, a much smaller country than Romania, however, has reported more than 15,450 cases. Serbia which has less than half the population of Romania, has registered 13,272 cases.

A day after a court ruling threw the legality of quarantine into doubt, authorities said there were 1,121 people in institutionalized quarantine in Romania, and 74,000 people in self-isolation at home, under medical supervision.

Some 675,382 tests have been carried out, including the 11,824 conducted since Thursday.
