Romania reports more than 700 new coronavirus cases, 38 deaths

Romania reported 733 new cases of coronavirus as testing dropped sharply over the weekend.

The Strategic Communication Group on Monday said that 10.68 % of people who were tested came out positive, double the percentage of recent days.

Just 6,390 tests were carried out, less than a third of the usual daily tests.

Some 38 patients with Covid-19 died in the past 24 hours pushing the total to 3, 029 since the pandemic began.

Twenty-one men and 17 women who had the virus died in the past day. Seven were under 60 and 31 were over 60.

All but two of the people who died had underlying health conditions.

Monday’s figures came after 1,087 new cases were reported Sunday, a lower figure than last week, when for three consecutive days there were in excess of  1,400 cases.

Even though there have been fewer cases for the last two days, it doesn’t mean a drop as far fewer tests were conducted.

Five counties didn’t report a single new case, likely reflecting reduced testing. The southern county of Prahova, which is a tourist hotpot, however reported 91 new cases, followed by Bucharest which saw 64 new cases.

There are currently nearly 500 patients being treated in intensive care units out of a toral of just under 7,500 patients with the virus who are hospitalized.

There are 9,600 people who have the virus isolating at home and 5,500 in institutionalized isolation.

Some 26,400 people are quarantining at home as they have come into contact with people in the virus or they live in an area where there is an outbreak.
