Romania says one-fourth of Covid-19 tests in past day were positive

One fourth of Covid-19 tests in the past 24 hours have turned positive results, a Romanian government department said Monday.

The Strategic Communication Group reported 1,591 new coronavirus cases on Monday, including a record 592 in the capital. Only 6,537 tests were carried out, about one quarter of the tests conducted on an average week day.

Monday’s positive outcome of 24.34% far higher than Friday when it was about 9%. Romania has seen a spike in recent days with more than 2,000 cases posted for four consecutive days until Sunday.

Romania’s overall national Covid-19 „positivity rate” in  has hovered between 6% and 7% for most days in the past week, the group said. A „positivity rate” is the percentage of all coronavirus tests that are positive and it an indicator of whether testing is keeping up with infections.

0If the numbers are too high it could mean that health authorities are disproportionately testing sicker patients or missing milder or asymptomatic cases. A low figure suggests the majority of infections are being detected.

The World Health Organization says that if a country’s „positivity rate” is around 5% or below for two weeks then it means there is widespread testing going on to a suitable level.

There were 45 Covid-19 related deaths in the past day taking the total number of deaths to 5,048.

Twenty-seven of the patients who died were men, and 18 women. Three of the fatalities didn’t have comorbidities, such as diabetes, cancer or heart disease.

Two were in their 40s, five in their 60s, 18 were older than 70 and 20 patients were over 80.

A record 592 patients with Covid-19 were being treated in intensive care units. About 8,000 SARS-CoV-2 patients are hospitalized.
