Romania scrambles F-16 fighter jets as Russia launches drone attack on its border

Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled early Friday n response to an attack by Russian drones on Romania’s border with Ukraine, in the second incident of its kind this week.

The jets took of from the 86th Air Base in Fetești to monitor the situation at the NATO member’s border, following the latest Russian drone attack on Ukrainian ports on the Danube, Romania’s  defense ministry said.

Authorities alerted the population in the north of Tulcea county with a RO-Alert message on their phones.

“During the mission, no unauthorized violations of the national airspace were recorded,” the ministry said in a statement.

The aircraft returned to the Fetești base in eastern Romania and landed safely at 3:15 a.m., the the ministry said.

It was the second RO-Alert message for local residents in the past few days. 

Overnight December 22 to 23, Russia attacked Ukraine with drones near the Romanian border. The defense ministry issued RO-Alert messages to residents in the counties of Tulcea and Galati in eastern Romania.

No Russian drone incursions on Romanian territory were reported then either.
