Romania wins silver and bronze at the Paraclimbing World Cup

Romanian athletes have won silver and bronze medals for the National Paraclimbing Team at the Salt Lake City.

Liviu Matei competed for the first time in the final stage of a World Cup and ranked second in the AU3 category, while Razvan Nedu, captain of the National Paraclimbing Team, reached the third step of the ranking in category B1.

The qualifying rounds and final were held from 7-8 May, and Romania’s squad had five athletes.

  • Răzvan Nedu, Adriana Tofan – category B1 (completely blind)
  • Ionela Drăgan – category B3 (visual acuity between 2/60 and 6/60 and a visual field between 5% and 20%)
  • Stefan Dogaru – RP3 category (category dedicated to those with neurological or physiological disability)
  • Liviu Matei – category AU3 (category dedicated to athletes with an amputated or partially amputated arm)

The athletes were accompanied to Salt Lake City, in Utah, the U.S. by the Climb Again team, headed by Claudiu Miu, coordinating coach, Antoaneta Barbu, team manager and Iulian Farkaş, the navigator.

Later this season, the Squad will take part in the World Cup in Innsbruck (Austria), the World Cup in Arco (Italy) and the European Championship in Villars (Switzerland).

The Romanian National Paraclimbing Team is supported this year by the National Paralympic Committee, Viva Credit, Zuzu, Kaufland Romania, Groupama Asigurari, BRD, ALD Automotive and FRAE.

The Climb Again Association, coordinator of the Romanian paraclimbing team, is a non-governmental organization affiliated to the Romanian Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing (FRAE), founded and led by Claudiu Miu, former Balkan climbing champion.  Since 2014, Climb Again organizes free climbing therapy sessions, kinetotherapy and psychological counseling for children and young people with disabilities: visual impairment, hearing impairment, autism spectrum disorder, neuromotor disorders, associated deficiencies.
