It’s a different kind of regional cooperation. Romania which has an abundance of some wildlife, is sending some of its lynxes to forests in Central Europe where they have become scarce.

The medium-sized wild cats are captured and then sent to forests in Slovenia and Croatia as part of a program to increase wildlife in regions which have seen a depletion in the number of wild animals in recent years.

Romsilva forestry officials are tasked with locating the lynx, which are then tranquilized and put into quarantine before being relocated abroad, Pro-Tv reported.

After they are captured, they are put in special cages and veterinarians take samples which are sent to laboratories.

They then spend one month in quarantine before being transported to their new habitat. The natural habitat for the lynx is a forested-area with a cold, snowy winter.

Mihai Pop, a volunteer, told Pro-Tv the animal is photographed and a passport is issued. The lynx gets a collar and a chip with its name on it.

Romanian lynx can be found in the remote mountains in the eastern counties of Bacau and Vrancea in naturally protected areas. Forestry officials began monitoring them 35 years ago.

Adria Titianu, a Romsilva hunter, said the efforts were part of an international repopulation program, coordinated with the environment ministry.

Several years ago, lynx were considered an endangered species, but numbers have risen in recent years, allowing Romania to take part in the program.
