Romanian state institutions are facing more than 10,000 cyberattacks daily, Defense Minister Radu Miruta said Tuesday.
Miruta did not offer further  details on specific targets or suspected perpetrators, but it is the most ‌precise public insight Romanian authorities have given about the scale of the threat that the EU and NATO member faces.
Romania’s top court annulled a presidential election on suspicion of Russian interference in favor of a far-right frontrunner in December 2024. Moscow denied allegations.
But declassified documents from intelligence identified over 85,000 cyberattacks around the election which targeted system and social media vulnerabilities.

“We are observing each day more than 10,000 attacks against our institutions,” Miruta told a conference on Tuesday held by the Economist focused on defense, government policies and energy.

“The discussion is not only around cyberattacks, the discussion should also be around the way the digital transformation is used in order to introduce fake news, influence perceptions about very important national aspects,” he said.

Prosecutor general last year said a criminal investigation had revealed a pattern of hybrid attacks against Romania over the last year, seeking to influence voters and weaken state institutions.

The campaign included cyberattacks nline disinformation and ransomware cyberattacks linked to pro-Russian groups.

Romania shares a 640 km border with Ukraine and has had Russian drone fragments regularly fall on its territory during the war.

Romania’s latest national defense strategy said that cyberattacks as well as corruption and weak institutional capacity were the main risks to national security.
