A young Romanian woman was killed in a bear attack on Tuesday during a hike in the Carpathian Mountains, rescuers said.
The 19-year-old woman’s body was recovered by rescuers in the Bucegi area in southern Romania, authorities said.
The bear that fatally mauled the unnamed woman was shot, according to the spokesman of the Prahova County Gendarmerie Inspectorate (IJJ), Adelin Gurgui, told Agerpres.
The woman was attacked by the bear on the Jepii Mici mountain range. Mountain rescuers said she was dragged and torn to pieces by the bear in the attack.
Prahova Mountain Rescue have recovered her body which will be taken to the Forensic Medicine Service for an autopsy.
Judicial sources told Agerpres that the victim was 19 years and from the northeast city of Iasi, but lived in Bucharest.
Following the attack, rescuers intervened and shot the animal, which was described as “extremely aggressive.”
Another tourist who saw the attack called the 112 emergency services was transported by mountain gendarmes to the resort of Busteni.
Romania has more bears than any other country in Europe than Russia. The population has increased to about 8,000, former Environment Minister Barna Tánczos said last year.
