Romanians overwhelmingly want the country to remain in NATO, even though parties skeptical of its Western alliances made historic gains in recent parliamentary elections.
According to the survey by the Inscop polling agency, 88.1% of respondents said they do not want Romania’s to exit the North Atlantic Alliance. That is significantly higher than a poll three years ago, conducted a month before Russia invaded Ukraine.
A total of 8.1%, however, believe that the alliance Romania joined in 2004 would be beneficial for Romania.
The survey was conducted by telephone interviewing 1,000 respondents. It has a maximum 3.1% margin of error.
The results were published by Remus Ștefureac, director of Inscop, in a post on social media.
The poll was commissioned by the NGO Funky Citizens and was conducted in the second part of December last year, after Constitutional Court had canceled the first round of the presidential elections over Russian meddling. Calin Georgescu, a NATO and EU skeptic improbably won the first round thanks to intervention by a ‘state actor’ later revealed to be Russia in massively boosting his presence on TikTok.
The latest poll results show a disconnect with that result and the success of nationalist parties in December 1 parliamentary elections. The survey also shows that Romanians are more in favor of being a member of the alliance than they were three years ago.
In a poll taken in January 2022, a month before Russia invaded Ukraine, some 76% wanted to remain in NATO, lower than the latest figure. The same poll showed a decrease in those who wanted to leave NATO_ 18.7% in January 2022 down to 8.1% in December 2024.
