Romanian national football Mircea Lucescu was due to be discharged today from Bucharest University Hospital on Friday

The coach for Romania’s national team, Mircea Lucescu, suffered a heart attack Friday and has been transported in serious condition to a unit that treats critically ill cardiac patients.

The 80-year-old coach underwent three resuscitation operations and an angiography.

He then underwent primary angioplasty, a procedure used to unblock the coronary arteries and restore blood flow. A balloon is inserted to dilate the narrowed area.

The University Hospital issued an official statement:

He was taken urgently and promptly and benefited from the necessary medical and therapeutic interventions, according to the protocols. Currently, his condition is stable, under careful specialized monitoring.

The patient remains hospitalized in the Cardiology Department, where he is receiving the appropriate medical care,” the hospital said.

On Tuesday, two days after he fell ill during Romania’s training camp, Mircea Lucescu underwent surgery at the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital.

Doctors implanted a defibrillator.
