Romania’s embassy in Kazakhstan is in contact with some 100 Romanians who are currently in the country where dozens have reportedly died in protests which erupted initially over fuel price rises.
The Romanians are mainly specialists and experts employed by private companies, the foreign ministry said.
Romanian staff at its embassy in the capital in Nur-Sultan are safe, the ministry added.
Violent protests in recent days have seen the government resign and the declaration of a state of emergency. Troops from a Russian-led military alliance are headed to the Central Asian country to help quell the unrest, CNN reported.
Romania’s foreign ministry says it is closely following and monitoring the situation.
In line with the European Union’s position, Romania’s foreign ministry called for a peaceful settlement and dialogue.
It said it has received just two requests for information on the flights out of the country.
Tens of thousands of Romanians were deported to Kazakhstan from Soviet-occupied areas in 1941 during World War II.
