Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis on Thursday launched a climate change policy project to tackle Romania’s response to extreme weather and creating a greener economy.
The presidential office published a report called: „Limiting climate change and its impact: an integrated approach for Romania.”
“Scientific studies and atypical weather phenomena that are more and more common such as extreme heat waves, drought and wildfires – indicate the acceleration of global warming with tangible and indisputable negative implications for our country,” a statement said.
The president, who is actively involved in efforts at home and internationally to combat climate change, will set up a working group which will be coordinated by the Climate and Sustainability Department.
„Romanian and foreign experts will be in the working group and they will identify challenges Romania is facing and efficient ways to respond.”
The best approach to climate transition will ensure a healthy environment and prevent extreme weather events and associated natural disasters in tandem with widespread access to clean energy, job creation and green economic growth, the statement said.
The president’s office said it was launching a one-month public debate and asked people to write to [email protected] , with their views.
Officials will have meetings with climate change groups, academics and researchers, the business community and non-governmental organizations.
