Romania’s vaccine rate rises to nearly 45%, but still low. People in cities getting the most jabs

Romanians living in cities have been vaccinated in much higher numbers than in poorer and rural areas, the latest figures show.

Vaccine rate

Almost 11 months after the vaccine campaign began, some 44.3% of the eligible population has received a jab, the Strategic Communication Group said Thursday.

The vaccine rate is highest in the capital Bucharest where some 64.43% of over-12s have been immunized. In Cluj, more than 56% are inoculated and a majority of eligible people have haf anti Covid-19 shots in the Black Sea port of Constanta and central town of Sibiu.

In the European Union some 61% of people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 meaning that the Romanian capital is the only place which is doing better than the EU average.

Eligible people

Vaccine coordinator Valeriu Gheorghiţă says he hopes that 50% of eligible people will be immunized against Covid-19 by the end of the year.

Romania is the second-least vaccinated country in the European Union after Bulgaria. Hundreds have died every day since October in Romania which is one of the highest rates in the world for the population size.

Fourth wave

A relentless fourth wave has led to record cases and deaths and authorities imposed restrictions requiring people to have green passes for many daily activities. Romanian health authorities say that more than 90% of the deaths are unvaccinated people.

Romania’s vaccination campaign started well, but slowed as an entrenched distrust of authorities kicked in. An uncoordinated vaccine communication campaign and disinformation on social media added to vaccine hesitancy.

Lombardy

Suceava, a town in the northeast which is called Romania’s „Lombardy” where the wreaked havoc at the beginning of the pandemic has the lowest vaccine rate in all Romania, with less than 28% of residents getting jabs.

Covasna, a rural, sparsely populated county in central Romania, is the second least vaccinated area, with 28.55% of people immunized, Hotnews reported.

Overall, 46.6% of adults in Romania are now vaccinated.

More than 7 million Romanians fully vaccinated against Covid-19
