The whopping sum involved to protect the Turda Salt Mine

After another one of Romania’s great salt mines, the Praid Salt Mine, collapsed at the beginning of June, leaving the local population significantly more unemployed, funding has been approved for the improvement of the Turda Salt Mine.

In fact, authorities did say in 2024 that expansion would start in 2025, and last until 2027.

The project targets the “Iosif Mine”, standing at a depth of 115 square meters and cover 10,000 square meters in width. This is currently closed and will require investments of approximately EUR 25 million, if not more, to receive visitors.

The bell-shaped mine, mined in 1740, will have five panoramic elevators, an artificial river, and several suspended walkways which allow people to see the inside of the salt mountain up close, reports Romania Insider.

The mines now see 60,000 visitors per year — investors say the number should double once work is complete.

Financial evaluation has been approved, and pre-contracting is underway.
