Bucharest district 4 mayor announces a new park will be built and named after US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump may not be popular everywhere in the world, but in Bucharest he’s about to get a park named after him.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by district 4 mayor Daniel Băluță who said Trump will have a park dedicated to him in the Romanian capital.

The move is to mark 250 years since the US Declaration of Independence and highlight strategic ties between Romania and the United States.

The Sector 4 City Hall will build the new piece of greenery near the Tudor Arghezi Park, as a symbol of the Declaration of Independence and the strengthening of relations between the Romanian and American communities.

“Our community, of Sector 4, can become part of a global story, of friendship and respect between nations. This year, when the United States will celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the moment that marked the birth of the American nation, we will also be able to mark this in a special way,” the mayor wrote.

“The current President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, (is) a symbol of friendship and common values that unite us,” he wrote on Facebook.

The Bucharest district mayor said he recently met with American officials, including Paolo Zampolli, special envoy for global partnerships, and Darryl Nirenberg, the new US ambassador to Romania.

“I recently met with …. Zampolli, and the new U.S. Ambassador to Romania, His Excellency Darryl Nirenberg, to discuss collaboration and connections between our communities,” he added.

Donald Trump isn’t the only global political figure to have a Bucharest address named after him. Bucharest has a long history of naming streets and parks after global leaders of the day: the Charles de Gaulle Square was renamed after a visit of then French President Jacques Chirac to Bucharest in 1997. The square was previously called Adolf Hitler during World War II when Romania was allied to Nazi Germany.

In the past, Bucharest streets were named after British wartime leader Winston Churchill and Soviet dictator, Joseph Stalin.

The date for the park’s inauguration has not yet been announced.
