Ukraine’s Zelensky to visit Romania

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit European ally Romania on Thursday as Russia’s invasion enters its fifth year.

Romania is a staunch ally of Ukraine with which it shares a 640-kilometer border. It is Zelensky’s second visit to Romania since October 2023, when he was received at the presidential Cotroceni Palace by then President Klaus Iohannis.

Zelensky will meet President Nicusor Dan who said on the anniversary of four years of war that Russia has unleashed “a merciless war against a nation that refused to allow itself to be defeated.”

“Ukraine is fighting for all of us and maintaining the security of our entire continent, with admirable courage and resilience,” he stressed.

“Four years ago, one of the most terrible scenarios for Europe became a reality. Russia has attacked Ukraine, unleashing a merciless war against a nation that has refused to let itself be defeated. Since then, Ukraine has been fighting for all of us and maintaining the security of our entire continent with admirable courage and resilience.

“Broken families, unimaginable dramas, lost lives, all these represent huge sacrifices and efforts, for which we are grateful to the Ukrainian people,” Nicusor Dan said.

He stressed that Romania will support Ukraine “for as long as necessary”.

“Together with our partners in the European Union, we argue that negotiations to end the war must continue until the conditions for a just peace are met, with security guarantees that prevent the possibility of any new conflict. Peace in Ukraine means peace for Europe. Anyone who threatens our citizens must know that our strength lies in unity. And the European Union is becoming stronger and acts with more solidarity,” the head of state said.
