The number of coronavirus cases rose to 576 on Monday, authorities said, the sharpest spike in a day. There were two more COVID-19 deaths on Monday bringing the total to five.
The Strategic Communication Group on Monday said a record 143 new cases were registered since the previous day. Patients were aged 5 to 76.
A 72-year-old woman who was hospitalized in the northern city of Suceava died Monday morning, the group said. She had tested positive on March 21 and had diabetes and heart problems.
A man, 71, from the same city also died Monday. He was hospitalized on Saturday and tested positive for COVID-19 shortly before his death. He had previously been treated for heart problems in a hospital inthe city of Iasi, where he may have contracted the disease from another patient.
Seventy-three people have recovered. The four people who died all had underlying health conditions.
There are currently seven people in intensive care in a serious condition.
A total of 5,066 are in institutionalized quarantine, while more than 72,000 are in self-isolation at home.
