Romania has been sentenced by the ECHR to legally recognize same-sex couples
10,000 signatories have joined the #ParteneriatCivilACUM (#CivilPartenershopNOW) movement initiated by MozaiQ and Aluziva and supported by 80 civic organizations t demand lawmakers legalize civil partnership law.
The campaign comes at a time when Romania has continued to fail to provide legal recognition to same-sex couples, despite a 2023 European Court of Human Rights ruling in the case of activist Florin Buhuceanu and others v. Romania that the Romanian state has to ensure a legal framework for the recognition.
Thee Court of Justice of the EU also ruled, in 2018, in the case of Coman v. Romania, that the country must recognize same-sex couples.
Currently, two legislative proposals on civil partnership are blocked in the Legal Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making forum. Legislative drafts in Parliament have already received positive opinions from the labor, human rights and equal opportunities committees.
The civil partnership would provide legal protection to unmarried couples in Romania, including for same-sex couples, in essential areas such as inheritance, hospital caregiver, joint property regime, or access to joint bank credit.
The #ParteneriatCivilACUM movement urges the public to ask lawmakers to adopt the legislation and to respect Romania’s obligations at European level, by signing the petition which can be signed here.
“Civil partnership is not a privilege, but a minimum form of protection for families that already exist in Romania. These are elementary rights, to be able to take care of your partner, to be recognized by the state and to have legal protection in relation to institutions. We ask the Parliament to unblock this law and adopt civil partnership now,” said Vlad Viski, president of the MozaiQ Association.
Polls show that 5,828,000 Romanians support the introduction of civil partnership, and the law would benefit both same-sex couples and hundreds of thousands of unmarried heterosexual couples in Romania.
The movement is supported by content creators and public figures, including Aluziva, who joins the initiative and encourages the public to speak openly about the importance of legal recognition of all families.
As part of the campaign, supporters are invited to post videos explaining why they support civil partnership and to mobilize their communities to sign the petition.
Supporters of the campaign are encouraged to share the messages using the hashtag #ParteneriatCivilACUM.
The #ParteneriatCivilACUM Movement is an initiative of the MozaiQ Association, supported by over 80 civil society organizations in Romania, influencers and public figures, which aims to adopt civil partnership legislation for all couples in Romania.
