Romania’s ambassador in Moscow, Cristian Istrate, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry where he was handed a note saying that a staff member of the local Romanian Embassy had been declared persona non grata.
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) confirmed the information, and the Romanian government has deemed the decision unfounded.
This measure is said to be a response to a previous unmotivated decision of Romania to declare a diplomat of the Russian Embassy in Bucharest persona non grata in May a Russian diplomat who was carrying out activities that violated the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
