Coronavirus cases and Covid-19 related deaths rise in Romania

The number of new coronavirus cases in Romania rose to 1,470 on Tuesday, with 44 Covid-19-related deaths in the last 24 hours, authorities said.

The Strategic Communication Group said 551 SARS-CoV-2 patients were receiving treatment in intensive care units, a new record. The number of patients in ICU has steadily risen over the past week.

Healthcare officials carried out 21,330 tests in the past day, of which 6.89% were positive, a relatively high figure compared to other days.

Bucharest reported 291 new cases, more than anywhere else, and also higher than in recent days, while the northwest region of Cluj registered 73 new cases. Ilfov county which is just outside Bucharest reported 66 new cases.

The total number of cases stands at 125, 414 and 4,792 people have died of the virus. Some 100,636 patients have recovered, authorities said.

Thirty men and 14 women succumbed to the virus, of which 37 were over 60. One patient was in their 20s, two were in their 40s and three were 50-year-olds.

They all had underlying health conditions such as cancer, diabetes or kidney disease.

There are more than 7,500 patients in  hospital and another 10,435 people with the virus who are self-isolating. A further 7,341 are in institutionalized isolation.
