Coronavirus cases rise sharply over the weekend in Romania, highest daily count in five weeks

The number of new coronavirus cases in Romania surged to 320 on Sunday, with 16 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Sunday’s daily count came after 275 fresh cases were reported on Saturday, a sharp increase over previous days, the Strategic Communication Group said.

After a drop in new cases to fewer than 200 a day, daily cases have risen to over 200 in the past week leading to fears that the virus is not yet under control.

The last time there were more than 320 cases in a day was on May 7, when there were 392 cases.

The weekend figures come as Romania prepares to loosen some restrictions on Monday. Private schools and malls will be opened and travelers from 17 countries will no longer be required to go into quarantine.

Parliament is due to vote on Monday whether to lift the state of alert. President Klaus Iohannis has urged lawmakers to maintain restrictions which were imposed in mid-May.

There are 165 patients being treated for their symptoms in intensive care.

Romania has registered 22,000 cases of the virus since the outbreak.

Some 15,719 patients have recovered.

Some 1,410 patients have succumbed to the virus.

There are about 2,000 people in institutionalized quarantine and almost 98,000 in self-isolation at home.

More than 560,000 tests have been carried out nationwide.
