Covid-19 cases pass 5,000 in Romania, more than 100 deaths including four-month baby in day of bleak records

A four-month-old baby boy was one of 107 Covid-19 patients who succumbed to the virus on Wednesday when Romania posted a record 5,343 new virus cases in what was the bleakest day in the country since the pandemic began.

The Strategic Communication Group said 60 men and 47 women with the virus lost their lives, including the infant who had a number of medical conditions.

Two people in their 30s, seven in their 40s, 17 in their 50s, 16 in their 60s, 38 in their 70s and 26 patients older than 80 succumbed to the virus.

Seven had no underlying health conditions such as diabetes, cancer or heart disease.

There are 861 SARS-CoV-2 patients being treated in intensive care units, another negative record. The number of patients needing intensive care have risen almost daily in the last month.

Some 36, 815 tests were carried out, giving a ‘positivity rate’ of 14.33%, which is considered high but the lowest since Oct. 24.

Romania has posted a total of 222,559 cases of which almost 160,000 have recovered.

Bucharest added 744 new cases and there were more thabn 300 cases i=n the northwest Cluj region and southwest Timisoara county.  Two other counties had more than 200 new cases and separately 17 counties had more than 100 infections.
