Former President Traian Basescu has criticized Romania’s Constitutional Court for ordering a recount of the first round of presidential elections, an unprecedented development in Romania.
The former president said that the elections must continue “in the absence of evidence of fraud.”
He added that fraud that “cannot be found by the Constitutional Court, but only by justice institutions (such as) the prosecutor’s office and a court of law, probably the High Court.”
He said “the elections should go ahead and, the second round should probably be validated.”
“We need a court decision that finds fraud in order to be able to cancel the elections. Otherwise, no,” Mr. Basescu, who was president from 2004-2014, told Digi24.
He said that elections had become “unpredictable… which is very serious for democracy. I think it’s a big mistake (Canceling the elections.).”
Referring to a previous decision of the Constitutional Court that aimed to eliminate another populist, Diana Sosoaca, from the electoral competition, Basescu called it an “error, an abuse” of the Constitutional Court.
Romania’s Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) has postponed validating the elections until Friday following complaints filed by two presidential candidates, Cristian Terheş and Sebastian Popescu, who came 9th and 12th in Sunday’s elections.
