Hurricane Helene has ripped through six of the USA’s southeastern states, killing over 100 people.
Millions of people have been left without power, water, roads, or communication.
North Carolina was particularly hit, isolated as it is in its mountain region.
Households were destroyed, ancient trees ravaged, buildings and cars ruined, power lines entangled.
As people continue to evacuate on the few roads yay are still accessible, search teams continue uncovering bodies.
The death toll is 128 at present.
Hundreds are still reported missing.
Some say that houses floated down the river with people inside.
This was a severe Category 4 hurricane.
Locals are paralysed in shock. Those further off, who intended to fetch relatives, have been told to consider the highways closed, so that rescue teams can do their work as efficiently as possible.
“This is an unprecedented, catastrophic event […] So we cannot yet estimate how long it will take to restore power to everyone”, said the mayor of Asheville.
Because of highway access loss, resources like water are being flown in gradually. Along with water, they need food, blankets, clothing, port-a-potties, baby formula.
