A Romanian man has been fined 3,000 lei (about 600 euros) for keeping an ostrich in his flat.

Police in the Danube port of Drobeta-Turnu Severin said the man lived on the outskirts of the town in southwest Romania.

The animal protection department of the Mehedinti county police and veterinary officials went to his home after they were informed he was illegally keeping the bird there.

The 30-year-old man was fined under an animal protection law. He was asked to take steps to make sure the ostrich was kept legally.

Realitatea de Mehedinti reported it was not the first time he’d been fined by the Animal Police.

Romania set up the department in August 2020 to provide better animal welfare. Since then, people fined for keeping or brinhging animals such as horses in their homes.

the law aims to punish mistreatment and cruelty to animals.
