The Ratiu Forum on Monday announced the launch of the Christopher Coker History Research Prize in honor of the globally respected political scientist and political philosopher.
The prize is a tribute to the Coker (1953–2023) who was co-director of LSE IDEAS and a key figure in shaping the LSE IDEAS–Ratiu Forum partnership. Formerly known as the Ratiu Forum History Prize, the prize has been renamed to reflect “both recognition of his intellectual legacy and a continuation of the values he embodied throughout his career,” a statement said.
Launched in 2021 as an annual call for papers, the prize aims to encourage young researchers from Romania and across the region to explore complex and often contested historical topics. It promotes rigorous analysis, critical engagement with historical narratives, and a deeper understanding of how the past informs present-day political and social realities.
It is part of The Ratiu Forum’s Teaching of History Programme, which seeks to explore the various versions of History that are taught in school and how these versions further influence public attitudes towards socio-political realities.
Announcing his death in September 2023, the LSE called him: “A world-renowned academic who dedicated his life to writing extensively on all aspects of war.”
“Christopher was a most incredible professor, intellectual, human being and inspiration to all who have known him, ” wrote Nicolae Ratiu, Chairman of the Ratiu Foundations who worked with him for almost 5 years to develop the Ratiu Forum/LSE IDEAS association “into a significant and admired hub on the CEE map of rare thoughtful debate.”
