Read Joe Biden’s new immigration plan for the USA

A little over half of US voters support deporting all or most undocumented immigrants in the US, and over half consider sorting out immigration should be a top priority for the US government. In this context, and in light of the upcoming November presidential elections which Joe Biden faces against Donald Trump, Biden has now released a plan allowing illegal immigrants to gain US citizens, the guidelines of which are as follows:

  • Most significantly, ndocumented spouses of US citizens who have been living in the US can request lawful permanent residence while staying in the country.
  • The requests will be approved on a case-by-case basis.
  • The spouses have to be married and living in the US for at least 10 years as of June 17, 2024, and “not pose a threat to public safety or national security”, says a DHS fact sheet.
  • The processing of permanent residence applications can take months to years, and will lead to a green card if approved, not automatic US citizenship.
  • This would exempt spouses from travelling back to their home country to apply for citizenship at local consulates, which has always been the norm up to now.

The DHS fact sheet says that around 500,000 non-citizen spouses of US citizens are eligible for the program. Around 50,000 children of these spouses are also eligible for this process.

To many critics, this seems like a backtrack on the poorly received restrictions Biden tried to enforce two weeks ago. In any case, a firm decision on the matter might very well make or break the results of the next US elections.
