Remind me in 2032: Romania to become significant energy exporter

Probably in light of recent events involving Russia, Ukraine, and neighboring Moldova, Romania has stated that it intends not only to double its electricity production but also to come a major exporter of energy in the Black Sea region.

The Romanian government has admitted, at the same time, that it doesn’t presently have the infrastructure to achieve this goal, and needs an intelligent energy transition.

Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja has revealed the Romania’s energy mix includes hydrocarbons, coal, nuclear sources, hydro sources, wind, solar sources, biomass, and…storage for batteries, which has shown results in the past two years.

Storage capacity, he said on Facebook, will allow Romania to benefit from both sustainable and affordable energy.

For a country with a generally low yearly temperature, coal is in important in Romania. But Burduja says that coal plants will be replaced with gas-fired power plants in the years to come.

Should Romania successfully exploit off-shore gas in the yet-untouched and highly precious Neptun Deep perimeter, then indeed Romania will have twice as much gas as it currently produces (meanwhile, Greenpeace Romania is raging against the potential dangers of this radical move).

Gas plants will also be replaced by nuclear-electric plants and Small Modular Reactors, reports Agerpres.

Neptun Deep is progressing as planned
