Report:  Charles to return to Romania, this time as king

Charles III will arrive in Romania on June 2nd less than a month after his coronation in Westminster Abbey, according to reports on Monday.

As prince, Charles visited Romania every year for more than 20 years, but there were questions whether his new role would restrict those visits.

He will meet President Klaus Iohannis and also visit his residence in the Transylvanian village of Viscri, according to News.ro citing sources. As in previous visits, he will not be accompanied by his wife, Queen Camilla. Universul.net was unable to get independent  confirmation of the visit.

Charles has no less than 10 properties in Romania of which the best known is the one from Viscri.

President Iohannis and his wife Carmen were among those who attended the coronation of King Charles earlier this month.

King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla, were crowned in London on May 6, in a grand spectacle, awash with pomp and ceremony.

More than 2,200 guests from across the world, including Princess Margareta and Prince Radu, joined the royal family at the historic Westminster Abbey for the first coronation in 70 years.

The ceremony featured medieval traditions but also included modern touches — with non-Christian-faith leaders playing an important role. Charles seeks to project a more inclusive image at a time when younger generations, and many Commonwealth countries around the world, are questioning the future of the monarchy.

Charles fell in love with Viscri and bought property there in 2006. Since he became king, locals of the village have been waiting for news of a visit from the new monarch.

Charles first visited Transylvania in 1998 and has said he immediately fell in love with Romania. The British king can trace his lineage back to Vlad Tepes, one of Romania’s national heroes who was also known as “Vlad the Impaler” for his ruthless treatment of enemies.

After his 1988 visit, the then-prince traveled to Romania in most years, usually in the spring. In a 2020 video, he said: “I have come to know and to love so much about Romania,” adding: “There is so much more that I long to explore.”

Locals of Viscri say Charles’s influence on their tiny village has been mostly positive, with the settlement now a popular site for travelers. The royal presence has also increased house prices.
