Romania is expected to hike the minimum wage by almost 11% next year in line with a European Union directive.
Under the move, the gross minimum statutory wage would increase from 3,700 to around 4,100 RON to conform with a European minimum wage law. The Senate has already approved the proposal which has been sent to the Chamber of Deputies for the final vote.
“The national minimum gross wage … will be updated annually depending on the purchasing power, the general level of wages, the growth rate of wages and labor productivity at national level,” Labor Minister Simona Bucura-Oprescu was quoted by News.ro.
The draft law was adopted on Monday by the Senate in a 99-4 vote.
If approved by the Chamber of Deputies, the net minimum wage would increase to about 2,450 lei net, compared to the current 2,363 lei.
“The minimum wage must not be more than 50% of the average gross salary. The draft law involves strengthens the role of trade unions and employers’ associations,” Mrs. Bucura-Oprescu said.
